About DevCruft

DevCruft is an independent project: a blog about what quietly fills a developer’s Mac, and a free app being built to show the same thing as a map.

The app

It is in development and not available yet. There is nothing to download and nothing to buy. When it ships it will be free, for macOS. The waitlist is the only way we will announce it, and it is one email.

Everything described on the homepage is a design, not a shipped feature. Where a page says what the app will do, that is intent — we would rather say so than imply a product exists.

How these guides are written

Each guide starts from the documentation for the tool in question — Apple’s, Docker’s, Gradle’s, npm’s — plus the paths those tools actually write to, and explains three things: what the folder is, whether it regenerates, and the exact command to clear it.

The rules every guide follows:

  • Give the real command, not a screenshot of an app doing it.
  • Say plainly when something is risky, and what it costs to get back.
  • Never withhold the answer to push a download.
  • Name other tools honestly, including where they are the better choice.

Sizes quoted in the guides are indicative, not measurements from a fleet of machines we monitor: this site has no telemetry and the app does not exist yet. Your own numbers come from the du commands in each article.

Corrections

If a command behaves differently on your Mac, or a path has moved in a newer macOS, tell us and the guide gets fixed: hello@devcruft.com. Corrections are the most useful mail we get.

Languages

The site is published in eight languages. Translations of the most-read guides are machine translations reviewed for terminology, not by native speakers — if one reads badly, the email above reaches someone who will fix it.

Privacy

No account, no tracking without consent. What the site collects, and what happens to a waitlist email, is in the privacy policy.
